SHIMI
SHIMI (Supportive Housing For Individuals with Mental Illness) is an innovative partnership between New Dawn Enterprises Ltd., Mental Health Services (Cape Breton District Health Authority), the Canadian Mental Health Association and community citizens of Cape Breton Regional Municipality. This exciting new initiative has engaged community partners to provide innovative solutions to meet a pressing community need for an “at risk” population of individuals living with mental illness and in need of supportive housing options.
The project includes the provision of high quality, independent housing and a range of responsive supports to adults living with a mental illness. The housing units are maintained by New Dawn Enterprises. Peers, friends, families, health care workers and New Dawn tenancy representatives constitute the main foundation of support. The level of need and extent of support are determined by the individual. Full partnership, respectful communication, autonomy, choice and stable, decent and flexible housing are the cornerstones of this project. The voices and experiences of people who live with mental illness have been and will continue to be the driving force of this project.
