Port

Welcome

Welcome to New Dawn Enterprises’ Ports Page. We hope that you find the information on this page useful and that it helps to shed new light on a relatively complex issue: the ongoing development of the Port of Sydney. The development of the Port of Sydney involves many individual, collective and government players, and it is an issue that has and will continue to change from month to month and year to year as new players, development proposals and community priorities emerge.

On this page you will find links to Background Information on the Ports, a Glossary, a Timeline, and a Media Archive. The Glossary contains definitions for a number of the key terms and organizations that come up in conversations about the port, including the Greenfield, Laurentian Energy, ECBC, the Sydney Ports Corporation and Federal Transport Authorities. The Timeline traces the evolution of this issue from the inception of ECBC and Laurentian Energy to the dredging of the harbour and present-day community concerns around port governance and port marketing. Finally the Background Information and Media Archives pages offer a more in-depth look into some of larger questions and more notable events related to the Port of Sydney.

If you have any questions or comments about the information found therein please do not hesitate to contact us at 539-9560 ext. 235 or ports@newdawn.ca

New Dawn and the Port of Sydney

The former Sydport industrial park, and the Greenfield site adjacent to it, together represent a precious community asset and can play a key role in the development of Sydney and the surrounding communities. Laurentian Energy has been owner of these assets since ECBC divested itself of the site in 1999. However, Laurentian is facing significant financial challenges and a new structure is needed to steward the assets.

New Dawn’s position on the Port of Sydney is based on a set of principles:

  • That the community should lead in determining its future.
  • That the community should own its key assets.
  • That the community has the capacity to make the best use of its assets; and it has the responsibility to do so.

New Dawn’s proposal is for a new model of economic development; a model where wealth created here stays here.

New Dawn’s proposal was never for New Dawn to become the owner and operator of Sydport or the Greenfield. Rather, New Dawn had proposed a process in which the port assets would be placed in an independent organization’s ownership. That organization would have a governance structure that would be accountable to the community, ensuring that there is the proper and transparent debate in the community on what form of development would take place.
