John Alexander Whalley

21 August, 1962 – 10 January, 2025

On Friday, January 10th, powerful winds swept our shores and waves crashed, backlit by an ominous moon. The Island was notably unsettled.

Amidst the noise, and as he did so often in life, John slipped quietly away in death.

Those who knew John grew in his radiance. He shone brightly in our conversations, in the work we did together, in all corners of New Dawn, and in his love for the community.

He was humble, brilliant, principled, prone to the most beautiful laughter, gentle, generous, and visionary. Singular in every possible way.

Over the last decade, John became and remained a cornerstone of New Dawn. He was a driving force behind our work in immigration, our work on housing and homelessness, and our thinking about governance, leadership, and local and global economies. He believed in, and was ever striving for, the imminent realization of an Island and a country that took care of everyone.

John was wise and full of love. We are deeply blessed for the time we had together.

The only thing that isn’t worthless: to live this life out truthfully and rightly. And be patient with those who don’t.

Marcus Aurelius

We are in Unama’ki, one of the seven traditional and unceded ancestral territories of the people of Mi’kma’ki. This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship which the Mi’kmaq first signed with the British Crown in 1726.

We wish to recognize and honour this understanding of the lands on which we reside. It is from here, on these lands, that we work to create and support a culture of self-reliance and vibrancy.
