Rankin MacSween named to Order of Nova Scotia
New Dawn’s former President/CEO recognized for community leadership
The former president of Canada’s oldest community development corporation has received the Order of Nova Scotia.
Rankin MacSween, who was president of New Dawn Enterprises for more than 30 years, is one of five Nova Scotians to receive the highest honour in the province in 2025.
The Order of Nova Scotia recognizes citizens for doing outstanding things professionally and for the community.
On Dec. 30, Lt.-Gov. Mike Savage released the names of the order’s newest members.
An emailed release said MacSween was being recognized for his outstanding contribution as a businessman and community leader as he “transformed a small volunteer initiative into a nationally recognized model of social enterprise.”
Four other Nova Scotians have also been awarded the Order of Nova Scotia for 2025.
They are:
- Darrell Dexter of Liverpool, Queens County. Former premier of Nova Scotia, municipal politician and lawyer who has provided free services to community organizations
- John George (Jack) Flemming of Halifax. A philanthropist and entrepreneur being recognized for what he gives and does for local charities and professional associations.
- Joel Plaskett, Dartmouth. A celebrated artist, songwriter, producer, mentor and philanthropist.
- Carolyn G. Thomas of East Preston. An educator, human rights and community advocate who is receiving the award for her contributions to education, government and community development.
The ceremony where the new members will be invested to the Order of Nova Scotia will be held in Halifax in the spring.
“These Nova Scotians have made outstanding contributions to their professions and communities,” said Lt.-Gov. Savage in the emailed release. “Their meaningful contributions have directly benefited Nova Scotians and Canadians.”
Since the Order of Nova Scotia was started in 2001, there have been 132 people invested.
