A Better Bite Community Kitchen Receives $25,000 Grant to Support Seniors

SYDNEY, N.S. – New Horizons for Seniors Program helps provide nutritious meals and personal care packages to seniors in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

A Better Bite Community Kitchen has received a grant from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program. The program provides grants and contributions for projects that make a difference in the lives of seniors and in their communities.

The funding enables A Better Bite Community Kitchen to prepare 240 personal care packages for New Dawn Meals on Wheels and New Dawn Homecare clients. Each care package includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, socks, soap, non-medical face masks, and more. Additionally, the grant will provide five free meals to each New Dawn Meals on Wheels client — approximately 500 meals in total.

“In addition to the benefits of regular, hot, and nutritious meals, New Dawn Meals on Wheels provides an opportunity for seniors to maintain or regain independence in their own home,” says Kathleen Whelan, New Dawn Meals on Wheels Coordinator. “And it gives them and their loved ones a sense of well-being, knowing that our community is working together to ensure that our seniors are well cared for.”

“A Better Bite Community Kitchen’s project is a great example of how our government’s New Horizons for Seniors Program can empower local groups to provide important supports for seniors in their community,” says the Honourable Deb Schulte, Canada’s Minister of Seniors. “During these challenging times, a hot meal or a little extra support from A Better Bite Community Kitchen can make all the difference to the Cape Breton seniors they serve.”
