Eleanor’s Court – Rapid Housing Initiative Building Name Announcement

New Dawn is honoured to support the Ally Centre of Cape Breton in naming the Rapid Housing Initiative building Eleanor’s Court in memory of the late Eleanor Young.

The Ally Centre of Cape Breton announced that they will honour the late Eleanor Young in the naming of the Rapid Housing Initiative building at the Nova Scotia Native Women’s Association’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit Awareness Walk on Red Dress Day. New Dawn is honoured to have the building named in Eleanor’s legacy and will work to ensure that Eleanor’s Court provides a safe home to those most in need in our community for years to come.

We are in Unama’ki, one of the seven traditional and unceded ancestral territories of the people of Mi’kma’ki. This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship which the Mi’kmaq first signed with the British Crown in 1726.

Ketu’-keknuite’tmek aqq kepmite’tmek ula tela’matultimkip wjit maqamikew ta’n etekl mtmo’taqne’l. Ula tett, ula maqamikek, etl-lukutiek l’tunen aqq apoqntmnen apoqnmasimk aqq weliknamk Unama’ki.

We wish to recognize and honour this understanding of the lands on which we reside. It is from here, on these lands, that we work to create and support a culture of self-reliance and vibrancy.
