Eltuek Arts Centre Presents: a man lies here – A Celebration of Murray Gallant’s Folk Art

SYDNEY, N.S. – Eltuek Arts Centre invites the community to honor the life and legacy of Cape Breton’s beloved “grandfather of folk art,” Murray Gallant, with the opening of a man lies here. This special exhibition, hosted in Gallery 203 at Eltuek Arts Centre (170 George Street, Sydney), runs from January 31 to March 22, 2025.

To launch the exhibition, we warmly welcome friends, family, and admirers to a free opening reception on Thursday, January 30, from 5 to 7 pm. The evening will feature refreshments and a unique opportunity to experience Murray’s colorful, humorous, and heartfelt creations up close.

As a highlight of the evening, Gallery 209 will screen, for one night only, Murray Gallant Makes Me A Crow, a short film by acclaimed filmmaker and artist Nelson MacDonald. This poetic homage offers an intimate glimpse into the playful, polka-dotted world where Murray worked, laughed, and created art that captured the spirit of Cape Breton life.

Murray Gallant (1938–2024) spent his days in what he affectionately called his “shed” (never a studio), crafting pieces that have brought joy and inspiration to countless lives. His work is celebrated not only for its humor and vibrancy but also for its deep connection to the land and people of Mi’kma’ki.

Exhibition Hours:
Monday to Friday: 9 am – 4 pm
Saturday: 9 am – 3 pm

We hope you’ll join us in celebrating the life and legacy of Murray Gallant through this heartfelt exhibition.

We are in Unama’ki, one of the seven traditional and unceded ancestral territories of the people of Mi’kma’ki. This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship which the Mi’kmaq first signed with the British Crown in 1726.
