A Better Bite Community Kitchen provides free groceries thanks to community support
SYDNEY, N.S. – Better Bite Community Kitchen, a division of New Dawn Enterprises, has provided 3,334 grocery hampers to families and individuals in need. This would not have been possible without our community donors.
HAROLD’S BAKERY — Harold’s donated 100 loaves of bread per week for the month of April so that recipients of Good Food Packs could receive fresh bread in their free grocery hampers.
FRESHII — Freshii on Charlotte Street donated $1,000 which assisted our prepared meal delivery service (New Dawn Meals on Wheels) as well as the Good Food Packs program.
GARBAGE NIGHT MUSIC GROUP — The group “Garbage Night”, which moved their musical talent show to Facebook Live and raises money for a community cause each week, donated $6,000 to the Good Food Packs program which helped provide 171 grocery hampers to local school children.
THE SALVATION ARMY — The Salvation Army donated a truckload of donated McCain’s potatoes. Their donation has helped fill the grocery hampers for Good Food Packs recipients. The donation was delivered by Fr Bill Burke, pastor, and Jamie Bates, volunteer, at St Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish in Sydney.
CAPE BRETON REGIONAL LIBRARY — Thanks to the Cape Breton Regional Library, families received books — and seeds! — in their grocery hampers. Happy gardening!
REBECCA LEWIS FROM THE COALITION FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE — Rebecca Lewis from the Coalition for Social Justice sent hand-written cards to be included in some of the Good Food Packs.
UNITED WAY — United Way Cape Breton and United Way Canada funding for the Good Food Packs program was used to provide family, individual, and school grocery hampers to those in need. Without the financial support of United Way, at both the regional and national levels, our response to COVID-19 would not be what it is.
We are incredibly grateful to these community organizations for their support and donations since the pandemic began. We would also like to thank the dedicated volunteers and New Dawn staff who have spent countless hours unloading deliveries, preparing bags, and delivering hampers. The combined donations and volunteerism have been essential in our efforts to help feed community members experiencing food insecurity and financial barriers amid the pandemic.
