Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Lead with compassion, integrity, and excellence
  • Schedule and facilitate team meetings to discuss issues and cases
  • Cultivate a collaborative and cohesive work environment

Human Resources Management

  • Hire, train, promote, manage, and terminate staff and students, as required
  • Manage the activities and performance as well as provide support, direction, mentoring and recognition of the staff team
  • Maintain proactive and responsive employee relations in order to achieve optimal employee satisfaction and performance
  • Ensure staff adherence to Anchor Youth Space and New Dawn policies
  • Identify, plan, schedule, deliver and/or coordinate relevant staff training or professional development
  • Update, develop and evaluate policies and procedures relevant to program and service provision
  • Schedule staff and ensure all shifts are filled and/or fill in on an as needed basis and provide on-call support to staff members
  • Liaise with other New Dawn management on human resources, finance, and volunteer resources

Site Management

  • Supervise and monitor the day-to-day activities in the space
  • Ensure adherence to safety and security policies and standards
  • Promote a supportive, trauma-informed environment that promotes youth empowerment
  • Liaise with New Dawn management for site repairs, maintenance and upgrades

Partner Relations & Communications

  • Lead and maintain an active Integrated Services for Youth Partnership table and use the work of the table to guide program and service delivery
  • Lead and maintain an active relationship with Anchor Youth Space Nova Scotia and the other Anchor sites across the province, ensuring regular communication structures are in place and that staff are connected with their relevant communities of practice
  • Engage with IWK research teams and local research resources in the Cape Breton area with a goal of furthering academic and community research relevant to serving youth in CBRM
  • Liaise with other agencies on behalf of youth and participate in community committees, projects, or activities that advance the wellbeing of youth in CBRM, as appropriate
  • Guide development of the Anchor Youth Space Sydney marketing and communications for the purpose of reaching youth and their caregivers, as well as raising for the broader community the issues Anchor Youth Space Sydney seeks to address for young people in CBRM
  • Liaise with other New Dawn management on communications, media needs and inquiries

Service Integration

  • Ensure Anchor Youth Space Sydney continues to be actively guided by the advice of the Youth and Caregiver Advisory committees
  • Lead service integration working with data systems, site processes, and partner relationships to continually coordinate care for youth accessing the site; reducing the barriers they face to access care
  • Advocate to reduce barriers to integrated care at the systems level (government entities and community partners); such as improved access to mental health, addiction and other supports
  • Guide staff in data collection and use the reports from the IWK Research Coordinator to make appropriate updates to service operations
  • Remain current on evidence and best practices for both service integration and serving young people

Program Development

  • Develop overall programming that enables Anchor Youth Space to achieve its goals
  • Support staff to develop programming that builds youth resilience and prevents further occurrences of toxic stress and adversity to occur
  • Guide program development that builds youth skills and abilities and provide structured, safe opportunities to engage in youth leadership and development
  • Guide staff towards using evidence-based program design and if needed, work with local researchers to assess effectiveness of interventions
  • Revise, update, disseminate, and coordinate program implementation
  • Ensure program delivery aligns with IYS Guiding Principles and New Dawn’s mission, vision, and philosophy

Budget & Financial

  • Plan for annual operations, budget, program improvements/innovations, and outcomes
  • Manage record of program budget including expenditures, staffing funds, and capital repairs
  • Adhere to, and ensure adherence to, New Dawn financial policies and procedures, including tracking expenses, claims, and receipts
  • Maintain positive and productive relationship with government and other funders
  • Liaise with other New Dawn management on fundraising and fund development

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Respond to complaints and/or concerns through investigation, communication, preventative, and remedial actions, follow up and monitoring with organizational leadership to protect staff, volunteers, youth and caregivers, visitors, the organization, and others
  • Participate in internal New Dawn (staff, management, etc.) meetings as required
  • Look for potential improvements and help implement solutions
  • Maintain professionalism, tact, diplomacy, and sensitivity to portray New Dawn in a positive manner, consistent with its values and vision
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, engaging in professional networks, and participating in professional organizations
  • Respond to the needs of others with effective communication, mutual respect, and consistent follow through to build trust and workplace relationships
  • Promote the mission and values of New Dawn both internally and externally
  • Maintain safety, privacy, and confidentiality of employees, clients, and volunteers
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, Business Administration, Healthcare Management, Social Services Administration or a related field of study; Masters level preferred
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience leading a multi-disciplinary team to offer coordinated or integrated care to vulnerable populations
  • Trained in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Brain Story Certification and/or Mental Health First Aid
  • Valid, up-to-date and clear Criminal Records Check including vulnerable sector search, required due to the sensitive nature of our work with youth
  • Valid and up-to-date Child Abuse Registry Check, required due to the sensitive nature of our work with youth
  • Valid and up-to-date First Aid/CPR & AED Certification
  • Demonstrated understanding and familiarity at a high level with youth development (ages 12-25) and how trauma and early adversity impacts the developing brain
  • Demonstrated understanding and familiarity at a high level with application of the science of resilience to affect positive outcomes for young people
  • Demonstrated experience using anti-oppressive practice (harm reduction, narrative practice, a client directed approach and a social justice perspective)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mental health issues, substance abuse and crisis intervention
  • Compassion, empathy, diplomacy, and problem solving
  • Experience working with and advocating for vulnerable populations
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and with guidance
  • Exceptional attention to detail and verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with others and lead others towards a shared goal
  • Highly organized and ability to work well under pressure
  • Proficiency with Microsoft suite of programs and applications
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability
  • Understands servant leadership and community-centricity

Work Conditions

  • Travel may be required
  • Physical ability to lift up to twenty-five pounds (25 lbs.)
  • Physical ability to walk up and down stairs and maintain a fairly active pace
  • Manual dexterity is required to use desktop computers and peripherals
  • Overtime may be required; working evenings/weekends as needed
  • Interacts with employees, management, and the public at large
  • Environment can be busy and/or noisy at times

Compensation Package

Salaried Employee Compensation Package 

New Dawn Enterprises believes in supporting the well-being of its employees and, in service of this, has created the following compensation package for permanent, salaried employees of New Dawn Enterprises, in addition to their salaries.

Canada Life Group Benefits: Medical, Dental, Life Insurance

New Dawn offers its employees group benefits provided by Group Health. Fifty percent (50%) of these benefits are paid by the employer, except for Long-Term Disability benefits which are fully (100%) paid by the employee. The plan also includes a component for Life Insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) and Vision Care. Dependent life is also included.

Self-Directed Registered Retirement Savings Plan

Employees may choose to begin participation in New Dawn’s Self-Directed RRSP plan after completion of three (3) months of employment. Employees may contribute up to 5% of their gross salary, deducted from their pay cheque. This is matched by the employer to a maximum of five percent (5%).

Reduced Hours Work Week

In recognition of the benefits of greater work-life balance and the value of flexibility and autonomy for human wellbeing, New Dawn has adopted a Reduced Hour Work Week. All full-time salaried employees are required to be in the office for 32 hours per week. These hours can be worked over four or five days. At the start of employment, a schedule will be drafted that meets both the needs of the company and the employee.

New Dawn acknowledges and is committed to the ongoing professional development and lifelong learning aspirations of its staff. The acquisition of new position-relevant skills and perspectives by employees creates a stronger, more informed, and modern organization.

Employees are strongly encouraged to research and outline education and/or professional development opportunities to discuss with their manager in the creation of their work-plan.

Paid Holidays

New Dawn observes thirteen (13) public holidays and other days for which staff will be paid. They are: New Year’s Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Civic Holiday, Labour Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Thanksgiving Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day

In the spirit of family, the President reserves the right to close the office between Christmas and New Year’s to enable employees to spend time with their families. This option will be reviewed, and a decision made annually depending on operational requirements. These non-statutory days will have no impact on employee vacation time.

Paid Vacation

All new employees entering the organization as a salaried employee will earn 15 days of paid vacation during the annum.

Mental and Physical Health Days 

Employees will be entitled to seven (7) days paid leave at the beginning of each calendar year. This can be carried forward to a maximum of fifteen (15) days total. It can be used for physical and metal wellness/illness and appointments for the employee or their family members.

Employee and Family Assistance Plan (EFAP)

New Dawn’s Group Benefits Plan also includes the provision of an Employee and Family Assistance Program. The Employee and Family Assistance Program (EAP) is a support system that employees and their families can turn to for confidential help with stress, anxiety and depression, family and relationship issues, addictions, legal and financial difficulties, health and nutrition concerns and workplace and career difficulties. The program is confidential and optional and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Café Marie Discount

Employees of New Dawn Enterprises can take advantage of a 20% discount at Café Marie, located in the Eltuek Arts Centre.

Years of Service

The Years of Service Recognition Program recognizes and rewards the service of New Dawn employees at milestones in their careers. All permanent full-and-part-time New Dawn employees are eligible to receive the Years of Service award.

STAR Program

New Dawn is proud to recognize and reward the excellent work and achievements of its employees. Managers at New Dawn will be given an annual budget to provide ongoing and immediate recognition to their direct reports throughout the year.

Corporate YMCA Membership Program

In an effort to create more opportunity for staff health and wellness, New Dawn offers a corporate membership in partnership with the Cape Breton YMCA. The corporate membership gives staff a 12% discount on the cost of membership, additionally New Dawn pays half the cost of an individual discounted membership.
