Port Hawkesbury welcomes more housing solutions

Developer New Dawn Enterprises presents concepts for 55-unit housing development

Over 80 Port Hawkesbury residents shared their excitement and applause for more homes on the horizon.

The room was filled with support at a public hearing for a 55-unit housing community proposed where the old arena and Lion’s Club were on MacQuarrie Drive.

Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton shared her enthusiasm with us.

“It’s never too late to appreciate the fact that we’re a growing town. And, this particular project is going to contribute so much to our continued trajectory of growth and progress,” she expressed.

“It’s certainly harder to grow when you don’t have places for people, for population growth.”

Developer New Dawn Enterprises displayed concepts of the project, while the At Home Housing Association also attended to support the development.

New Dawn says half the units are expected to be affordable rent, while the other half will be at market value.

The proposed rent amounts they listed are:

  • $700 per month for an affordable 1-bedroom unit
  • $900 per month for a market rate 1-bedroom unit
  • $900 per month for an affordable 2-bedroom unit
  • $1200 per month for a market rate 2-bedroom unit
  • $1200 per month for an affordable 3-bedroom unit
  • $1500 per month for a market rate 3-bedroom unit

They say most pets will be accepted, while large dogs will be considered.

There is expected to be 60 parking spaces and 30 to 50 per cent of the units will be accessible.

The estimated cost of the project is $12 million.
