The Importance of Owning Community Assets
“Islands tend to be prosperous, particularly when they have control over themselves.”
On March 28, 2011, New Dawn hosted a community meeting, “Hear and Be Heard”, to discussion the future development of the port of Sydney and the importance of public ownership of community assets.
Rankin MacSween, President/CEO of New Dawn told a crowd of more than three hundred people that, in order to be prosperous, the community must be in control of its most important assets, in this case the greenfield site.
With overwhelming community support, CBRM council voted unanimously to purchase the greenfield site on Sydney harbour for $6 million in 2012 and it continues to be a community-owned asset.
