Employment Support Program prepares international students to navigate job market

After the success of the first Employment Support Program this winter, the New Dawn Newcomer Centre is seeking participants for its spring cohort, starting in April.
The 8-week program is designed to help international students enhance their employability skills and prepare for meaningful career opportunities in Cape Breton through sector-specific workshops, workplace culture curriculum, and networking and training opportunities.
To be eligible, you must be:
- An international student graduating in May/November 2026
- Able to commit to one session per week (Mondays, 3–4 hours)
- Interested in a career in any of the following:
- Health
- Hospitality and Tourism
- Trades (Construction)
Rajeshwari Kumar, a Cape Breton University (CBU) student studying in the Business Analytics Post-Baccalaureate program, took part in the first cohort and said it was a truly valuable experience.
“The program was thoughtfully designed to help students understand the Canadian job market and develop effect job search and networking strategies,” she said. “Through the sessions, I gained practical knowledge, useful resources, and greater confidence in preparing for my career journey.”
Jack Nguyen, who studies Supply Chain Management in CBU’s Post-Baccalaureate Diploma program, said he gained skills he can use right away in current and future jobs.
“I am so happy to share my experience as a member of the first Employment Support Program cohort. The program is full of useful information about the workplace and professional skills,” he said. “It has really widened my social network, not only with other members of the program but also with the speakers who already have experience in the workplace.”
